Watch NBA outside USA and Canada – why you need them?
NBA.com just unveilled its download store: you can now download all
playoffs games right after they were played.
The price chart:
- 2,99$ for 1 game
- 12,99$ for a whole series
- 79,99$ for all playoffs games
Problem is: if you tried clicking on the link above but don't live in the US/Canada, you must have gotten the message "region not allowed". This is due to the NBA selling exclusivity on its games to local networks outside the US/Canada, like Canal + in France. Unfortunately, in the example of france, Canal + does not broadcast all games: how can I watch my beloved Bulls get routed by the damn Pistons if Canal + keeps showing the Nets or the Suns? This is unfair, therefore it's certainly legitimate to try and circumvent that Canal + exclusivity in France in order to see a team that Canal + is not showing.
So here's the trick: if you're using Mozilla Firefox (as you should), you must download an add-on called HMA VPN. This will add a toolbar to you browser, which enables you to resort to a proxy server located in the US/Canada, and therefore fool the NBA's IP region detector. In order to do this, you must:
- go to any free proxy list site, like this one
- copy the latest proxy server's address from the US or Canada
- click on "add" on your SwitchProxy toolbar
- select "standard"
- paste the proxy server's address in the HTTP box (note that the "port" is the part of the address that follows the colon ":") and click "ok"
- give a name to that proxy server's address (like "NBA test")
- then, in the toolbar, select that name and click on "use"
You connection might be slowed down by the use of a proxy server, but it should be ok if you select the latest proxy server's address from the US or Canada. You should be able to download games for 2,99$ after that, provided you create an NBA account.
Apparently, a downloaded game can be seen on 3 different computers, so you should be able to pass them around between friends.
